Left alone, an impacted wisdom tooth can also contribute to jaw problems, sinus issues and alignment changes.

If the tooth has erupted normally and can be gripped, it's a simple extraction — quick, and priced from $150. If it's impacted under bone or gum, it's a surgical removal: the dentist opens the gum, sections the tooth and lifts it out, then closes with stitches.

Expect some swelling and soreness for a few days after surgery. Most people are back to normal within about a week with soft foods, rest and the painkillers we prescribe.
