What a root canal actually does

Inside every tooth is a soft core of nerve and blood vessels. When decay or a crack lets bacteria reach it, that tissue becomes infected — and the pain that follows is the kind that wakes people at 3am.

A root canal removes the infected tissue, cleans and disinfects the canals inside the root, then seals them. The tooth stays in your mouth, doing its job, instead of being extracted and replaced.

Does it hurt?

This is the question everyone asks, and the honest answer is that the toothache before treatment is almost always worse than the procedure. Root canal treatment is done under local anaesthesia and feels similar to getting a filling — the reputation belongs to the era before modern anaesthetics.

Treatment usually takes more than one visit, depending on which tooth and how many canals it has, and you'll be comfortable between appointments.

Why the price varies by tooth

Front teeth (anterior) typically have a single canal, pre-molars often have one or two, and molars can have three or four — each needing to be found, cleaned, shaped and sealed. More canals means more time and more precision, which is why a molar root canal costs more than a front tooth.

A root-treated tooth is more brittle than a live one, so your dentist will often recommend a crown afterwards to protect it from fracture. We'll tell you upfront if that's part of your plan.

Root Canal Treatment — your questions answered

How much does a root canal cost in Singapore?+

At Smile Central, root canal treatment is $400–$775 for a front (anterior) tooth, $500–$900 for a pre-molar and $872–$1,400 for a molar, excluding GST. Molars cost more because they have more canals to clean and seal.

Is a root canal painful?+

It's done under local anaesthesia and feels similar to getting a filling. The toothache that brings people in is usually far worse than the treatment that fixes it.

How many visits does root canal treatment take?+

Usually more than one, depending on the tooth and how many canals it has. Your dentist will give you the expected number of visits at your assessment.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?+

Often, yes. A root-treated tooth is more brittle, and a permanent crown ($750–$1,400) caps and protects it from fracturing. Your dentist will tell you upfront whether your tooth needs one.

What happens if I don't treat an infected tooth?+

The infection doesn't resolve on its own — it spreads, can form an abscess, and usually ends with the tooth being extracted. Treating it early is what keeps the tooth.
